Tenofovir
Tenofovir (TDF or TAF) is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) antiviral medication used to treat chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and HIV-1 in adults and children. Often used in combination therapies, it manages infection by reducing viral load, but is not a cure. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and rash.Â
Description
Key Aspects of Tenofovir:
- Uses:Â Treats Chronic Hepatitis B and HIV-1, and is used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV.
- Forms:Â Available as Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) and Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF).
- Side Effects:Â In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, it may cause kidney dysfunction (increased creatinine), bone density loss, and fatigue.
- Warnings:Â Patients should have kidney function monitored. It is not a cure, and stopping medication may cause, or worsen, hepatitis flare-ups.
- Mechanism:Â It works by blocking reverse transcriptase, a crucial enzyme for HIV and HBV to multiply, thereby reducing viral load.Â
